The city of Chicago is vast, but J.R. Donato makes an excellent tour guide. In his new video single “Not for None,” the 22-year-old emcee takes the viewer from Grant Park to his humble abode in North Chicago, where he hosts a lean party for his homies. Produced by Ziggy Jetson, the song finds the Taylor Gang Ent. rapper dancing around Inception-horns and spiraling sine waves, finding colorful new ways to boast about his lifestyle: “My orange diamonds like pumpkin/ and my yellow diamonds like funyuns/ I’m rollin’ round with my patnas/ we thumbin’ through the new money.” Debuted by HipHopDX, “Not for None” is J.R. Donato’s first video of 2016 as he looks to continue his grind on an upward path with more new music in the works.
Last September, J.R. Donato released his Fast Money & Freedom project, which carried a hazy, hypnotic soundscape produced in-full by Sledgren. Donato built up to the release with a series of singles, including “I Suppose,” which found him couch-surfing through the Chi, and “Life So Sweet,” where he landed at a trippy house party. Additionally, the GoodMusicAllDay-premiered “Mad At Me” showcased J.R. Donato embracing the opportunities that he’s encountered as an ambitious teenager, which included a regional high school tour with local legend Twista before signing with Taylor Gang Ent. “I sound like myself. These days that’s not easy,” J.R. Donato explained in an interview with AllHipHop. “The line for originality is thin, but I think I can walk that line fine. Also all my music has a message in it so it’s always relatable, and that’s what the game needs.”
