Switching seamlessly between rough-edged boom-bap and ethereal R&B, Brooklyn’s Siya is one of the most versatile talents in the Five Boroughs. Delving deep into her personal life, Siya walks a fine line between her two modes on 383 – For Roosevelt, her latest project out today. Interspersed with audio clips of sage advice from Bedford-Stuvesant’s most famous son, Jay-Z, 383 – For Roosevelt is an impressively versatile piece of work. Packed with intimidating street anthems, such as the Elevator Magazine-premiered boom-bap banger “Your Choice,” wistful love songs like “Houston Girls,” featuring Kirko Bangz, and the bilingual banger “Culture Vulture,” premiered earlier this week by Mass Appeal. Premiered by Genius, alongside a video interview and the verified and annotated lyrics from the album, the 10-track effort is Siya’s most complete work yet. Released by RnB Money, the boutique label owned by R&B singer Tank, and distributed by EMPIRE, 383 – For Roosevelt is available everywhere. “383 is the apartment building I was raised in,” explains Siya to Genius. “Roosevelt is the name of the projects. I was raised there with my grandmother, and I kinda just wanted to do this for [the people in the Roosevelt Projects]. I wanted to give this to them and show my appreciation to the streets for helping me become the woman that I am. If I didn’t go through the struggles that I went through… be it being a knucklehead in the streets, selling drugs, or being locked up. You know I had a crazy Grandmother who loved me to death, who raised me. She’s like the big Mama of the projects. If I didn’t lose so many of my friends to the streets, I don’t think I would have learned what life truly is and what life could truly be because it took those circumstances to show me that there’s so much more than the Roosevelt projects.” Born in California, Siya moved to Brooklyn to live with her grandmother when she was very young. Living in Bedford-Stuyvesant, home to Jay-Z, Mos Def and The Notorious B.I.G., Siya honed her rapping style before finding her style with the help of Tank, who signed her to his label. Last year, Siya released the fully-formed SIYAvsSIYA, her debut album featuring an appearance from Sage The Gemini, equally split between sinister street rhymes and wavy, electronic-influenced love songs. Beyond music, Siya found success as a television personality, appearing in all three seasons as the breakout star of Oxygen’s Sisterhood of Hip-Hop, a T.I.-produced reality series starring five female rappers who navigate their way through the male-dominated music industry. She recently joined United Talent Agency (UTA) for representation in both film and music spheres. “Siya’s time is now,” says Mike G, her agent at UTA. “Between her amazing album & work ethic, it’s just a matter of time before the world knows how talented she is.” Buy 383 – For Roosevelt: https://empire.lnk.to/383-ForRoosevelt Check out the Genius premiere: https://genius.com/a/brooklyn-mc-siya-premieres-her-personal-new-album-383-for-roosevelt |
