Queen Latifah Leaves Fans Shocked With Vocal Prowess After Singing National Anthem at Giants-Cowboys NFL Game

Queen Latifah went back to her home state of New Jersey to sing the National Anthem at this week’s Monday Night Football game. The performance shocked fans of the headliner of the CBS drama, “The Equalizer.”

Yet, fans of the hip-hop recording artist already knew that Latifah, nee Dana Owens was just as prolific a singer as she is a rapper and actor.

According to The New York Post, the performance was an ode to the tragedy that took place on September 11, 22 years ago, when a terrorist attack leveled what was once known as the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center. She is centered on the football field at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in an all-white suit where she was surrounded by members of the NYPD and FDNY choir. This took place right before the season-opening NFL game between the hometown New York Giants and their hated rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. This turned out to be the highlight for New York Giants fans as the Giants were blown out in a 40-0 shutout.

Fans of the acting rapper were amazed that she had such a lovely voice, not knowing that she had a whole jazz-inspired album just under 20 years ago. Billboard reported that her 2004 album,The Dana Owens Album”, was a top 20 jazz offering that reached No. 16 on the Billboard 200. It was such a well-received project that Latifah earned a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Four years later, she released another jazz album, “Trav’lin’ Light,” which also earned her another Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal album.

Yet, based on the comments on social media, many were clueless that the very talented woman could sing!

Another user had to remind folks that Latifah is also a renowned Broadway performer who won an Academy Award nomination for playing Matron “Mama” Morton in the movie-musical “Chicago” in 2002. She also starred on Broadway back in 2007 in “Hairspray” playing Motormouth Maybelle. You have to have chops if you play characters named Mama and Motormouth.

He also pointed out that she played the lead role of Bessie Smith in the 2015 HBO movie, “Bessie.”

Another Twitter user had to also remind others that for five years, we heard her singing the theme song of her hit 1993 TV series, “Living Single.”

Now, hopefully, the “outside” world can give Latifah the credit and praise she is due as she continues to bless the world with her amazing talent.

Check out Latifah’s recent conversation with BLACK ENTERPRISE‘s Jeroslyn JoVonn.
